If you are experiencing different types of discomfort and pain during pregnancy, you need to be careful about taking medications. Some medications you used to take on a daily or weekly basis may not be safe for you and your baby now that you are pregnant. Here’s a list of safe medications to take. Headaches: If you are having headaches during pregnancy, there are some medications that are safe for you to take. You can take Tylenol or Extra-Strength Tylenol. Do not take Advil, Aspirin, Motrin, or Aleve. If you are having headaches during pregnancy, this could be a sign of other problems, such as high blood pressure. Contact Dr. Hill if you are having regular, severe headaches.
Nausea: It is common for women to experience nausea (or morning sickness) during pregnancy. You can safely take one tablet of Zantac 75 twice a day to treat nausea during pregnancy. If nausea is not allowing you to keep any food or liquid down for 12 hours, call Dr. Hill.
Constipation: Many women experience constipation during pregnancy. While you can try and solve this issue by drinking plenty of liquids and eating fiber, you can also safely take some medications. While experiencing constipation during pregnancy, you can use Citrucel, Colace, and Metamucil.
Diarrhea: If you are experiencing diarrhea during pregnancy, there are some medications that are safe to take. To help treat diarrhea during pregnancy, you can take Immodium AD and Lomotil.
Hemorrhoids: It is common to experience hemorrhoids during pregnancy. They can be very painful, but there are certain medications you can use. To treat symptoms of hemorrhoids during pregnancy, you can use Anusol and Preperation H.
Heartburn: Many women experience heartburn during pregnancy. If you have heartburn during pregnancy, there are some medications that are safe to take, such as Mylanta, Tums, Zantac and Maalox.
Yeast Infection: If you get a yeast infection during pregnancy, you can use over the counter Monistat. If you have any other issues or questions, call Dr. Hill or Nurse Practitioner Cynthia Daniels.
Sleep: If you are having difficulty sleeping during pregnancy, you can safely take medication to help. To get better sleep during pregnancy, you can safely take Tylenol PM.
Allergies: If you are experiencing allergies during pregnancy, there are some over the counter medications that you can take. It is safe to take Benadryl, Zyrtec (not Zyrtec-D), Claritin Regular (not Claritin-D) if you do experience allergies during pregnancy.
Colds: If you have a cold during pregnancy, some medications are safe to take. If you do experience a cold during pregnancy, you can take Zyrtec (not Zyrtec-D), Plain Robitussin, Benadryl, Claritin Regular (not Claritin-D), Actifed, Chloraseptic Spray and Original Sudafed.
